Tanking: I miss you so much…..

Ever had your cellar tanked? How about your basement? Wine cellar?…..garage?

I used to do ‘tanking’ years ago, all over Yorkshire.  Now of course I ‘do’ basement waterproofing of type A or C.

I enjoyed tanking; doing it and reading about it and talking about it too. From Hebden Bridge to Barnsley; Leeds to Harrogate…and down to Wakefield now and again.

The trouble is, these days, jargon will always beat plain English.  Those who wrote BS8102 ‘code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground’, will be quick to point out, that tanking is a misnomer and a waterproof tank is not a good analogy of a dry basement in Leeds.  I beg to differ.

I’m enthusiastic about ‘basement waterproofing’, type A, type C and combined methods.  But my customers are not interested.  Okay; maybe the odd structural engineer or Architect gets a buzz from knowing a cavity drain from an active capillary pore blocker, but not anyone else; besides me that is.

So I’ve decided to carry on tanking basements, cellars and retaining walls…though for legal reasons I may still  mention type A or type C……. in the small print.

Dry Rot.

  1. Very interesting! I was really hoping that the tanking option would work out for my basement, but have been worried that the cavity drain malarchy might have pretty superceded the likes of vandex. I look forward to talking to you about this tomorrow 🙂
